Are Handmade Leather Poop Bag Holders Better Than Mass-Produced?
It’s one of those little dog-walking essentials you probably don’t think much about — until the cheap plastic one cracks, falls off the lead or starts looking a bit worse for wear.
A poo bag holder has a simple job, but when you use it every single day, it makes sense to choose one that works well, lasts and looks good too.
So, is a handmade leather poo bag holder actually better than a mass-produced one?
For many dog owners, we think it comes down to quality, practicality and how it’s made.
Why leather?
Leather is naturally well suited to everyday use. It’s strong, flexible and, unlike many plastic accessories, it can actually look better as it ages.
A poo bag holder gets a fair bit of use. It’s clipped onto a lead, taken out in all sorts of weather and usually knocked around more than you realise.
A good leather holder is made to cope with that.
There’s also something nice about having a practical accessory that doesn’t look overly functional. If it’s going to stay attached to your dog’s lead every day, it may as well look good.
What’s different about handmade?
For us, handmade means exactly that.
Someone has handled the leather, cut the pieces and put the finished holder together rather than it simply coming off a large production line.
At Hughies, our Repurposed Leather Pet Waste Bag Dispensers are handmade in small batches in the UK.
Working in small batches also means we can make use of materials that might otherwise go to waste, which is a big part of what Hughies is about.
Giving leather another life
We love finding ways to reuse good-quality materials.
There is already so much material in the world, so where possible, we would much rather give existing leather another purpose than automatically use something newly manufactured.
Turning repurposed leather into a useful dog-walking accessory means the material gets another life — and you end up with something a little more individual too.
Because of the nature of repurposed materials, small variations can be part of the charm. Your accessory doesn’t have to look exactly like thousands of identical ones.
What makes a good poo bag holder?
It doesn’t need to be complicated.
A good holder should clip securely to your lead, keep a roll of bags within easy reach and stay out of the way while you’re walking.
It should also be something you’re happy to leave on the lead rather than constantly taking it on and off.
For us, that means keeping the design simple, practical and made for everyday use.
Is leather difficult to look after?
Not at all.
If your leather poo bag holder gets dirty, simply wipe it with a damp cloth and let it dry naturally.
Avoid soaking it, and that’s really all the everyday care it should need.
Over time, the leather may soften or develop small changes in appearance. We actually like that. It means the piece starts to tell the story of all those walks you’ve taken together.
So, is handmade leather worth paying more for?
If you just want the cheapest possible way to carry poo bags, a basic plastic dispenser will certainly do the job.
But if you like buying things that are made with a bit more thought, feel good in the hand and are designed to last, handmade leather is worth considering.
We don’t think everyday dog accessories need to be boring or disposable.
At Hughies, we’d rather make something useful from a material that still has plenty of life left in it — and hopefully create something you’ll enjoy using on your dog walks for years to come.
