Sustainability: The Couch-to-Collar™ Story
Giving London’s sofa leather a new purpose
At Hughies, sustainability starts with using what already exists. Our Couch-to-Collar™ collection began with a simple question: could good leather from an unwanted sofa become something useful and beautiful for dogs instead of being discarded?
The answer became a growing collection of reclaimed leather dog accessories. Today, that includes our Classic Recycled Leather Dog Collar and Reclaimed Leather Dog Waste Bag Holder. Rolled and mystery-braided collar ranges are currently in development.
From sofa to dog accessory
I source unwanted sofa leather from London and carefully assess each piece by hand. Only leather with enough strength and usable life is selected. Creases, grain and gentle variations in colour are not treated as faults — they are part of the material’s history and make every finished accessory individual.
1. Salvaging and preparing the leather
Usable sections are separated, cleaned and prepared in the workshop. Working with an existing material takes more time than cutting from a new, uniform hide, but it allows good leather to remain useful for longer.
2. Cutting and making
The leather is selected for the product it suits best. Strong, consistent sections become collars, while smaller pieces can be used for dog waste bag holders. Each item is cut, assembled and carefully finished in our London workshop.
3. Finishing for everyday use
Edges, fittings and attachment points are checked carefully before an item is completed. Every accessory is made to order, helping us avoid producing large quantities of stock that may never be used.

Why reclaimed leather matters to us
Leather is a durable material that can often remain useful long after the furniture it came from is no longer wanted. Reclaiming it does not make our products impact-free, but it reduces waste, avoids letting usable material go to landfill and gives us a more thoughtful way to make distinctive dog accessories.
Because the supply depends on the sofas we find, colours and textures are naturally limited. That is part of the collection’s character: small batches, genuine variations and accessories with a story behind them.
