Rolled Leather Dog Collars Are Coming to Hughies

There’s been a fair bit of experimenting going on at the Hughies workbench recently.

I’ve been wanting to make a rolled leather dog collar for a while. I really like the traditional look of them, but as I quickly discovered, getting a piece of leather to sit neatly around such a small centre isn't quite as straightforward as it looks.

There have been a few attempts along the way, but I’m finally happy enough with them to give you a first look.

So, why rolled collars?

Most of the leather collars I make are flat, so I wanted to try something completely different.

With these, the main part of the collar is rolled to give it that lovely rounded shape, while the section around the buckle stays flat.

It's a simple design, which is probably why I like it so much. There isn't loads of decoration or anything unnecessary going on. It's really about the leather and the shape of the collar.

And they're lovely to actually hold. That's something that's quite difficult to get across in a photograph.

Why choose a rolled leather collar?

Rolled collars have a slimmer, softer shape than a traditional flat collar. They sit neatly around the neck and can be particularly useful for dogs with longer coats, where a wide flat collar can sometimes flatten or rub the fur.

At Hughies, ours are handmade from reclaimed leather that might otherwise have gone to waste, finished with solid brass hardware and made one at a time in London.

Like the rest of my handmade collars, I'm making these myself rather than buying finished collars and putting the Hughies name on them.

That means there's been plenty of trial and error.

I've changed measurements, tried different ways of forming the leather and made adjustments as I've gone along. It's probably taken me longer than I originally expected, but I'd rather get them right before I start selling them.

At the moment I've made them in cream, red, brown and blue.

Seeing all four sitting together on the workbench was probably the moment I thought, yes, these are going to work.

A slightly different Hughies collar

A lot of you will already know my Couch-to-Collar collars, which are made using leather I've reclaimed from sofas and furniture.

Finding ways to use leather that might otherwise be discarded is something that's become a big part of Hughies, and I'm constantly playing around with new ideas and different ways of making collars.

The rolled collar is another one of those ideas.

I'm starting with a small range rather than making dozens of them. That's generally how I prefer to do things at Hughies. Make a few, see what people and their dogs think, and let the range grow from there.
