I think the best dog gifts are usually the useful ones. Something that gets worn on walks, clipped to a lead or brought out again and again is much nicer than a novelty present that disappears into a cupboard a week later.
If you are buying for someone who likes handmade things or tries to shop a bit more thoughtfully, here are a few ideas from Hughies.
A handmade leather collar
A collar is one of the most-used things a dog owns, so it can make a really good gift if you know the dog's neck size.
My Couch-to-Collar range is made in London from reclaimed sofa leather. I clean and prepare the leather, cut each collar and finish it with solid hardware. Because the leather has had a previous life, there can be small differences from one piece to another, which is part of what makes them individual.
A dog bandana
Bandanas are an easier gift if you want something fun without spending a fortune. I make tie-on, snap-on and over-collar styles in gingham, heritage prints and other fabrics I find along the way.
If you know the dog's size, you can choose the style that suits them. If not, it is worth asking before ordering rather than guessing.

This is one of those things most dog owners use all the time but rarely think of buying as a present.
Mine are made from salvaged leather and clip onto the lead, so the bags are always to hand. They are simple, practical and a nice alternative to the usual plastic dispensers.

What I would look for in a sustainable dog gift
I would keep it simple: find out what it is made from, who made it and whether it is likely to be used for a decent length of time.
I am wary of big environmental claims. For Hughies, the practical part matters more: I use reclaimed and upcycled materials where I can, make in small quantities and try to make things people will actually want to keep using.
