Rather than buying brand new leather just to make more stock, I use carefully selected reclaimed sofa leather and turn it into collars and matching dog waste bag holders here at Hughies. If the leather still feels good, looks good, and has enough strength for the job, it deserves another go.

What do I mean by reclaimed leather?

For Hughies, reclaimed leather means leather that already exists and can be reused properly. In this case, it usually starts as sofa leather: soft, practical leather that was made to be sat on, handled and used every day.

Once I have a suitable piece, I check it, cut it, finish the edges and make it into something useful for dogs and their humans. A small mark or change in grain is not something I try to hide. It is part of what makes each collar feel a bit more personal.

Why sofa leather works well

Good sofa leather can be lovely for dog collars because it has already been made for real life. It is comfortable to handle, has a softer feel than some new leathers, and often has a natural grain that looks better up close than something too perfect.

Every piece still has to pass the common-sense test. If it does not feel right for a collar, I do not use it for one. The whole point is to make something that is sustainable, but still practical enough for everyday walks.

Reclaimed, upcycled and recycled leather

These words can get thrown around a bit, so here is the simple version.

• Reclaimed leather is existing leather that has been rescued and reused.
• Upcycled leather is material turned into something new, often with more purpose than it had before.
• Recycled leather can mean different things depending on the maker, and can sometimes refer to processed or bonded leather.

Why handmade makes a difference

Because I make these in small batches, I can work with the leather in front of me rather than forcing every collar to look exactly the same. I can choose the best part of the piece, match it with solid brass hardware, and keep the finish simple and classic.

That is the charm of the range for me. It does not look like it has come off a giant production line. It looks like someone has actually made it.

Choosing the right size

The best collar is still the one that fits properly. Measure your dog’s neck where the collar normally sits, leaving enough room for comfort. If your dog is between sizes, choose the larger size.
